July is a month when time seems to slow to a sticky crawl- the cruel sun making the air shimmer and vibrate with heat, thighs sticking together, piles of tomatoes, night swims, eating peaches over the sink, juice dripping down to elbows and chins. “July. Silence. Complete silence. The whole world floated.”1 The solstice is behind us and we are reveling in the feeling of neverending summer, deep time, blessed with sun and not yet ready to admit that the days will march steadily shorter now that we’ve passed the peak of the year. July is a month to forget everything, to sink into the simplest of routines and stay there for a while. We get our work done in the early mornings and evenings to avoid the heat, and luxuriate in long, idle, quiet afternoons inside.
