Welcome to mama eats, a weekly newsletter inspired by a simple + seasonal home life. This week’s post, transitioning to winter, is free to all readers. I try to provide as much free content as possible, however, this newsletter is a labor of love. If you have the means, please consider becoming a paid subscriber.

As we drift ever nearer to the end of the year, we are well and truly in winter. Jack Frost has been arriving almost every morning here and we delight to see the frost on roofs as we wake up and take our first peek of the day out of the window. Winter is a season that I used to dread, all the drab colors, rain, and mud, the layers of clothing needed before children can go outside- but maybe 4 years ago I decided I would make a conscious effort to see the beauty in it. To appreciate this little death, this necessary pause which makes way for all things to burst forth into glorious life in spring. Noticing the beauty has really helped me be happier and enjoy these dark months. I continue to strive to get outside as much as possible every day, even- especially- when the weather’s poor. I never regret it, fresh air and nature is always a huge mood booster both for me and the children. Even if it’s just gardening in the backyard!

Although I suppose it is a bit late to share, here is my beginning of winter to do list- of course this is not exhaustive and I most likely won’t get to everything, but I love lists and making them. I hope even though winter is already underway, that this will still be able to provide a few ideas and sparks for you to make this season a bit brighter. After this, I’ll be ready to hibernate and slow way, way down for January.

- Clean all of our windows and the chandelier- there is less natural light coming in this time of year, and cleaning the windows makes the most of the light that does come. We have a vintage chandelier that was part of our house originally, which sounds very luxe but it’s quite a simple one. Anyways, I always clean it well this time of year for maximum sparkle as well as all of our inside windows.
