Welcome to mama eats, a twice-weekly newsletter inspired by a simple + seasonal home life. This week’s post, on reading, is free to all readers. I try to provide as much free content as possible, however, this newsletter is a labor of love and I am a busy mama to three. If you have the means, and find value in what I share, please consider becoming a paid subscriber, which also gives you access to the growing archive of posts older than a month.

Siesta, Giulio Salti (Italian, 1899-1984)

Last February, coming out of the extended postpartum fog, I made a promise to myself to start reading for pleasure regularly again. I have always been a strong reader, devouring every book I could get my hands on as a child, but high school and college dampened my enthusiasm for reading for pleasure in certain ways- having to read books as a means to an end, to dissect and write papers on them instead of reading them for the sheer, in the moment pleasure of the words on the page in front of you. I fell out of the habit of reading, letting other pursuits crowd it out. It’s been really beautiful to bring reading back as a huge presence in my life again, and edit my time to make room for something which I find so nourishing for my mind.

I’m often asked how I find the time to read regularly, especially as a mother (I read 86 books last year). I wanted to organize my thoughts and advice on the matter here in case it helps or inspires someone to bring the joy of reading more to the forefront of their life, too. It truly is one of life’s simple and pure pleasures.
