Welcome to mama eats, a twice-weekly newsletter (Tues. & Sat.) inspired by a simple + seasonal home life. This week’s post, a recipe for a turmeric latte, is free to all readers. I try to provide as much free content as possible, however, this newsletter is a labor of love and I am a busy mother of three. If you have the means and find value in what I share, please consider becoming a paid subscriber, which also gives you the benefit of access to the growing archive (posts over a month old). This is a recipe I shared many years ago, but have been enjoying regularly every since, so think it is worthy of a republish this season when we could all use a little boost, both color wise and health wise.

I’ve experimented with so many replacements for coffee, my favorites being chicory based brews (dark colour and rich smell), matcha, and tea (similar ritual and a gentler, creative buzz).  I still love coffee for its flavor, body, and ritual- but it doesn’t make me feel great, and sometimes I want a cup of something warm and comforting in the afternoon- and a little more rich than tea. Then I found turmeric and fell in love, deeply.  The violently golden color is sunshine in a cup.  Especially on early or cloudy or gloomy mornings, a cup of turmeric latte is a joy to both look at and drink.

Turmeric has a host of benefits and is superb at reducing inflammation.  Living with rheumatoid arthritis, turmeric has been a regular helper for years.  I also make this for us when we feel like we are coming down with something, as turmeric is wonderful for sore throats and boosting to the immune system. (side note- I have a whole section about immunity + recipes for other immune boosting tonics in my ebook). If you live in a mild climate, you can even grow your own turmeric root if you have a little space for it.

I’ve never tried this with powdered turmeric, as the fresh root is plentifully available here.  If you do use powdered, I recommend starting with 1/2 teaspoon and adding more as you see fit, up to 1 teaspoon.  Adjust the other ingredients to your liking to make your perfect brew.
