Welcome to mamaeats, a twice-weekly newsletter (Tues. & Sat.) inspired by a simple + seasonal home life. I’m a mother of three, avid reader, gardener, and home cook who focuses on nourishing, whole food meals with a focus on plants. This newsletter is my labor of love, and it means so much that you are here. If you are not already, and are able to do so, please consider becoming a subscriber to support my work here. This gives you access to all the archives and recipes (find the recipe index here), as well as cook-along videos which go along with most recipes.
Good morning and happy weekend! This morning I’ve got some banana bread in the oven, a load of laundry humming along in the washer, and I’m sitting here with a cup of hot coffee, undisturbed- it’s a beautiful day already. After I send you this mail, I’m off to volunteer at my daughter’s track meet and then hopefully this afternoon getting our summer garden planted. I’ve got some plants James and I started from seed (basil, cucumbers, winter squash, zucchini) and we’ve still got to buy our tomato, pepper, and eggplant starts. This year, I’m planning to order them through our CSA, Good Humus. The roses are all beginning to shout, their riotous flush of bright, fluffy petals showing off all over the yard. I wonder if you are growing a garden this year, and if so, what you’re growing?

We had a very busy week, and I didn’t read as much as the week prior, spending some nights finishing up sewing James’ pajamas instead of reading. I’ve been working my way through The Coast Road, a novel by Alan Murrin, which I’m enjoying so far but also have not become consumed by it—meaning I’ve been picking it up here and there but it’s not keeping me up at night turning pages. What should I read next? I had a friend round for a curry dinner on Tuesday and we were chatting books (a favorite subject) and she highly recommended Kaveh Akbar’s Martyr!, so I think that might be my next read. Have you read it?
A few memorable food moments this week:

This week, the meal plan has got lots of good things: chorizo chili, artichoke pasta, burgers, pupusas, and a delicious-sounding deconstructed spring roll salad. Lots of seasonal vegetables- artichokes, peas, leeks, carrots, spinach, and beets- flavors, and fiber. It should be a delicious week. Let me know what you’re cooking this week, and happy Easter to those celebrating!
